Pick Your Side

Developing and launching the ultimate viral voting bin

Challenge

Back in 2016, Hubbub launched the Ballot Bin: the world’s first voting ashtray which asks the important questions in life. From the first experiment in London asking smokers to pick Ronaldo or Messi, to almost 5,000 bins tackling litter in 42 countries, Ballot Bins are proven to reduce cigarette litter by up to 73%.

Building on Hubbub's success tackling cigarette litter, could the idea of voting with rubbish work for general waste too?

Approach

The Ballot Bin proved that positive, playful ways to engage people on everyday issues like litter can cut through and, when rooted in insight and data, have a significant impact. Using behavioural insight from the Ballot Bin, we designed a solar-powered, interactive and customisable electronic voting bin to trial, and paired it with a social media campaign called #PickYourSide. The 8-week trial took place across Manchester and Southampton, testing whether voting bins can reduce litter on UK high streets, in collaboration with KFC.

Carefully curated voting question that acted as a playful conversation starter to engage passers-by and spark debate was central to the approach. These included the age-old cat vs. dogs debate, the local barm vs. bap debate in Manchester, and tapping  into the biggest cultural trend, team Barbie or Oppenheimer? ...BarBINHeimer?

I worked on the project from brief to final execution as the design lead, making key decisions on product design, prototyping to identify pain points and validate design decisions, crafting an impactful strategy for launch, as well as collaborating closely with manufacturing partner Instrument Industries on the product design.

Impact

  • Nationwide polling found 10 million people (15% of the UK) recognised the bins.

  • The compaign went viral, with the voting bins becoming a social media sensation and brands such as Heinz jumping on the trend and posting their own Pick Your Side-inspired memes.

  • Pick Your Side got people talking - of those who used a Ballot Bin, 58% had a conversation about them.

  • The bins successfully reduced litter - independent measurement by environmental tech company Ellipsis Earth found the voting bins reduced food and drink litter within a 20m radius by 60%-70%.

  • Given a hugely successful trial and interest from businesses, the voting bin is being developed for manufacture as a commercial product, launching in summer 2025, stay tuned!
