Community Calling

Developing a phone redistribution campaign digitally connecting 24,000 people across the UK

Challenge

There are approximately 1.5 million homes in the UK that still don't have access to the internet, yet an estimated 15 million disused smartphones sit tucked away in our homes.


The huge potential of these unused devices was highlighted when the Covid-19 pandemic struck, and digitally excluded households were unable to connect with loved ones or access vital resources like health advice, employment services and online education.

Approach

Launched in May 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Community Calling is a smartphone redistribution scheme inspiring those with a spare phone at home to gift it to someone digitally isolated. Each gifted phone comes with free mobile data, calls and texts, thanks to Virgin Media O2. The campaign has worked with community groups including Crisis, Women's Aid and Migrant Help to support a wide range of people across the UK, from survivors of domestic abuse and refugees, to those experiencing homelessness.

As the sole designer, working amongst project managers, my role included a variety of outputs. From providing strategic thinking to establish the user journey of those gifting their phone, to creating the brand identity and designing compelling marketing communications that drive sign-ups to the scheme. During the course of the project, I also led on briefing and working collaboratively with various external partners on photography, filmmaking, social collaborations and public activations.

Impact

  • Launched during Covid-19, the scheme was a lifeline during this long and lonely period for many beneficiaries who were socially and digitally isolated.

  • After a successful London-based trial, Community Calling was rolled out nationally and continues to digitally connect communities today.

  • To date, over 24,000 smartphones have been rehomed, providing vital digital support across the UK and reducing e-waste at the same time.
